AKG single ear bud found. If you or a student has lost this, please see Jeni Cousans.
Site Team are asking that teachers cast a fresh eye around their classrooms to ensure student tables and chairs are not right next to the radiators. There has been a spate of ‘radiator’ tickets which causes concern as with enough force, the radiators can be dislodged causing instant flooding of very hot water which is both dangerous and disruptive to lessons whilst being repaired and cleaned up.
If this does happen, please immediately send a student to main reception to radio Site Team or grab a radio holder and request they radio Site Team. Thank you.
The Academy is working to reduce single use plastic and one of the suggested ways to model this is by the use of glass water jugs and recyclable cups for staff and external meetings.
Suitable jugs with lids that fit nicely in the water fountains for refilling have been sourced and are stored in a cupboard in the Admin office. If you would like to make use of these for your meetings please visit the Admin Team who will point you in the right direction.
Due to the works being carried out throughout the Academy staircases, during August, please use only Staircase 5 for ground to lower ground floor and the lift for all other ground to all floors access. If you are unsure, please check with SHZ or JCS. Thank you.
Each term the Principal, DFO and Corporate Services and Brand Identity Manager meet to discuss H&S topics affecting the Academy. We met at the end of June to review this year’s H&S objectives (which can be found on the Calc here) and to consider what objectives to set for 2023/34. We are proposing that next year we focus on the following:
- To continue to improve the Academy’s H&S culture
- To build on and increase the current communication with staff about H&S
- To commission a fire risk assessment from a third party and action its recommendations
- To embed knowledge and understanding of evacuation and lockdown procedures.
Please let SHZ or JCS know if you have any suggestions regarding these.
The H&S Working Party which includes our H&S Link Governor, the TU Representative, and the Curriculum Leaders for PE, Science and Technology, held its termly meeting to review H&S at Chelsea Academy on Friday. Together we reviewed the above objectives as well as the recent first aid reports and incidents, the latest fire drills and recent lockdown practice (guidance can be found here) and other H&S concerns.
Please contact Jeni Cousans or Sara Hopkins with any comments or questions concerning H&S.

A note about Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) ….
Each term the Principal, DFO and Corporate Services and Brand Identity Manager meet to discuss H&S topics affecting the Academy. This month we celebrated the Academy’s recertification as being compliant with ISO 45001:2018, the international standard for health and safety at work. Thank you to all our staff members whose hard work made this possible.
The PE, Science and Technology curriculum Teams and the Site Team have now written risk assessments for all the significant risks they have identified associated with their activities. These can be found on The Calc here. Please do let Jeni Cousans or Sara Hopkins know if there is a significant activity or area of the Academy which you feel should have a risk assessment which is not on this list. We will look to support you in putting one in place.
We also reviewed progress to achieving our other key OH&S objectives for this academic year, which are:
- To have good employee awareness of OH&S issues;
- For all plant and equipment is maintained properly in line with legislation; and
- For the Incident Management Evacuation and Continuation Plan (IMEC) to be up to date and communicated to Academy staff.
We are on track to achieve these objectives by the aim of the academic year. For more details about these objectives please see the OH&S Policy and Management Manual on The Calc.
We continue to review recent first aid reports and incidents. Thank you to all of you for ensuring that you report any accidents or incidents or near misses. This helps us to identify any common causes or trends, enabling us to prevent more accidents in the future.
Please contact Jeni Cousans or Sara Hopkins with any comments or questions concerning OH&S.
Please let me know if you (or any students from your coaching group) need a lift to the church service on Friday 31st of March. If so, I’ll add the names you will provide to my list and I’ll have a member of staff who will meet the group at student services at 8.35 am on the day and drive them to the church in the minibus. Please let me know if you have any questions and I’ll be glad to help.
